iButton key not reading? A 10-cause troubleshooting ladder
A key that reads nowhere, reads sometimes, or reads on one door but not another — each pattern has different causes. A test-first ladder covering dirty contacts, wrong blank formats, reversed wiring, ground loops, worn readers and dead keys.
Three symptoms point three ways: reads nowhere → suspect the key itself; reads intermittently → contact and wiring; works on one door but not another → format branch and controller database. The table is ordered by how often each cause turns up.

Can an iButton key “run out of battery”?
No. DS1990A / TM1990A-class keys contain no battery — they are parasite-powered by the reader at the moment of contact. A key that stops working is dirty, damaged, or was removed from the controller database; it is never “flat”.
Why does my key open one door but not another?
Two usual reasons: the second door runs a different format branch (Cyfral or Metakom instead of Dallas), or the key simply is not enrolled in that door’s controller. The reader blinking or beeping tells you it can see the key — enrolment is then the issue.
Does frost stop Touch Memory keys from reading?
The silicon is rated −40 to +85 °C, so cold itself is not the problem. What does interfere outdoors is ice or moisture films on the contact faces — wipe them and the read completes normally.
How long does an iButton key last?
With no battery and a 0.25 mm stainless can, the limiting factor is mechanical: contacts are specified for around a million touch cycles, and in practice keys survive a decade or more of daily use. Fobs and housings usually wear out before the button does.
